About Shahin
Shahin’s judicial clerkship experience – in the federal and state systems and at the trial and appellate levels – enhances his perspective on litigating employment cases. Prior to joining the firm, he clerked for South Carolina Supreme Court Justice Jean H. Toal. This was followed by a clerkship with United States District Judge Joseph F. Anderson, Jr. in the District of South Carolina.
Shahin has represented employers in close to 100 lawsuits. Shahin has argued in state and federal courts, including on several occasions before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Along with Vance Bettis, Shahin has successfully represented South Carolina and its departments in important class action lawsuits, including Anonymous Taxpayer v. South Carolina Dept. of Revenue (S.C. 2008) and Ward v. State (S.C. 2000), in which he served as the principal brief-writer. In addition to representing employers in complex litigation cases, his areas of concentration include discrimination law, wrongful terminations, tenure and promotion cases, and constitutional issues. Shahin has represented small and large private employers and has also represented the University of South Carolina in employment cases. He is a certified specialist in labor and employment law.
Shahin has authored several books. His legal writings include co-authoring the first and second editions of the treatise Appellate Practice in South Carolina (by Toal, Vafai, & Muckenfuss). He has also published on the topic of Title VII discrimination claims. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of South Carolina, Shahin’s undergraduate degree is in mathematics. In 1995, he graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was on the editorial board of the South Carolina Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif and Order of Wig & Robe.
