Increase in Minimum Wage
July, 08 2009
The minimum wage is increasing by $.70 per hour on July 24, 2009. The minimum wage is currently $6.55 per hour and the new minimum wage will be $7.25 per hour. Employers should ensure that their employees who are not exempt from the minimum wage are receiving at least the new minimum wage, or be prepared to increase their wage rate on July 24.
The required cash wage for employers who use the “tip credit” for tipped employees remains at $2.13 per hour. Thus, it is important that employers continue to make sure that employees make enough in tips to bring them to the new minimum wage.
Employers who have not updated their posters since the minimum wage began increasing in 2007 should do so now. A free downloadable poster can be obtained from the U.S. Department of Labor's website, or by
